Co-Chair Candidate: Angelo Jones
Nevada Green Party Members,
My name is Angelo Jones. I would like to introduce myself to you and am asking for your vote as Executive Committee Co-Chair.
I first voted as a Democrat in 2004. Like most young people, my political knowledge was limited to mainstream news and work banter. I voted for Obama in 2008 only to be let down by 2012. I had given up on politics, let down by a false message of “hope” and “change”.
In 2015, I nearly died in the hospital and realized life is too short to waste. I also realized that I had to do more with my life and help others. At this time Bernie Sanders and the Green Party made their way into my life. Their words of equality, peace, and saving the ecosystem filled my heart with hope for a brighter future. I had finally found a political platform that could spread truth and understanding to the masses.
I worked on the Bernie campaign in California, working with nurse’s groups, and friends and delegates who attended the DNC national convention in Philadelphia. It was there that I learned about the seedy and corrupt side of politics. I personally witnessed the lies and the propaganda, and I saw a bleak future for the 2-Party system. After moving to Nevada, I was happy to find a local Green Party that I could get involved in.
Other political and activist experiences I have had centered around supporting and fighting for green initiatives such as ocean conservation, local, sustainable and organic food economies, legalizing cannabis, and supporting progressive political candidates.
There are several reasons I believe I am a good candidate for Co-Chair. I am a very real person who hopes to represent real people in a real party. Through who I am and my own personal experiences, I believe I am a person that broadly represents the party and the people. Being raised by a single mother, who is an extraordinary woman who I love and respect, has made me a man that values women and embraces feminism. My personal experience within the healthcare and school systems has opened my eyes to the problems and needs within these systems. Being multi-racial, I understand the oppression and struggle of people of color. I also hope to inspire the youth and be a bridge between the younger and older members of our party.
Along with my knowledge of technology, I plan on bringing fresh, creative, and new ideas to help build the party. I am not shy of hard work and I understand the responsibility being Co-Chair entails. I have the energy and passion needed to create a party for the people. Finally, I have a vision for the party as a movement that gets more people active in the political process and active in their communities.
I come from the small town of Jackson, California. I moved to Nevada seven months ago. Currently I am a self-employed small business owner working in sales. I have also worked as a personal trainer. I have always been an entrepreneur and have made charity an integral part of my businesses. A couple of the organizations we have contributed to are: a foundation for Nepalese kids to be able to go to school and an organization that helps people buy medical cannabis who could not otherwise afford it.
My special interests include public and motivational speaking, health and wellness. Although I am passionate about many issues, I am currently most interested in issues surrounding animal cruelty and school system reform.
In the end, I have learned this: We are one race, the human race, and I believe the Green Party is the only political/movement party that truly has mankind’s and America’s best interests at heart. The Green Party is the People’s Party! I’d like to end with one of my favorite quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward”. Thank you for the chance to work with you all to co-create a better future.
Co-Treasurer Candidate: Dr. Harry Duran
Dear Green Party Members;
The Nevada Green Party has a co-treasurer position open in the upcoming State Executive Committee election and I am declaring my intention to run for this office.
Grassroots democracy, being one of the 4 Pillars of the Green Party is reflected in the structure of the executive committee of the party.
The operation of the Green Party requires wise stewardship of financial resources with fair allocation of finances towards operations, projects, and events. In order to do this a treasurer is needed who has experience in managing money, balancing revenue with expenditure and accounting for expenses in a responsible manner.
My experiences as a physician and as a public health professional have given me the opportunity to develop skills in financial management through developing operational budgets in health care as well as local and state health departments. This experience has included writing and managing grants, preparing financial statements and reports for granting agencies and governmental bodies, preparing and delivering statements to assembled groups in meetings and in conferences. I have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and various statistical software packages, as well as preparation of standard charts, graphs, and other presentation formats including Microsoft Powerpoint, Adobe software, and the development of conference posters and presentations.
It is my hope that you will find a benefit to having me as treasurer on the executive committee of the Nevada Green Party.
Thank you for your consideration.
Harry Duran MD., MPH., PhD.
I am a physician with a broad range of experience in clinical, research, and public health medicine. Following graduation from medical school at Brown University I trained in neurotrauma at the Rutgers University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. I became interested in the area of epidemiology and obtained Master of Public Health Degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center , and my Ph.D. was developed at the Ohio State University in the field of pharmacology and toxicology. I received a second residency training at the University of Pennsylvania in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and am board certified in that specialty.
I presently treat patients who have encountered law enforcement and often have addictions requiring medical detoxification while incarcerated, or who may have serious chronic conditions, sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, serious orthopedic injuries, and who lack the resources to have these conditions treated while in the community. I also provided addictions treatment and health care in residential treatment programs.
Previously I was the county health officer in Elko County and the medical director of Elko Ambulance. I have served the healthcare needs of members of several Nevada tribes as a physician and have provided occupational medicine services to workers in the mining industry, trucking, and first responders; I am a certified disability examiner and forensic drug testing specialist.
I have lived in the State of Nevada for the past 11 years in Elko, White Pine, and Clark counties and have been a registered Green Party member since 2012.
I am a mountain bike rider, and hiker and love Nevada’s big and wild desert to explore and look to the Green Party as a political means for community based preservation of our ecosystems.
At-Large Candidate: Margery Hanson
My name is Margery Hanson and I am applying for the position of At-Large Member. I feel I would be an articulate, enthusiastic and intelligent asset to the Nevada State Green Party Organization.
I am politically active, Progressive, assertive and outspoken. I’m familiar with several forms of Social Media and internet organizing, including Slack, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumbler, GooglePlus, GoogleDocs, Instagram, Pinterest, WordPress and SnapChat. My goals are to see Single-Payer Health Care, Equal Rights and an end to endless war in my lifetime. I was an active member of the Democratic Party, as a Delegate to the Nevada State Democratic Convention in 2008 and in 2012, for Barack Obama, door knocking, organizing events and speakers for Nye County such as Tom Daschle.
Then a Delegate to the Nevada State Democratic Convention in 2016 for Bernie Sanders and with the help of Lisa Sumiyoshi, together we organized the “Debate Rally for Bernie Sanders”, in Las Vegas and garnered over 3000 people to attend, as well as arranging to have Paul Sasso, owner of the “Tesla Bern Mobile”, cruze the Strip and arranged for Greg Auerbach to donate the banners and posters, for distribution amongst the groups that supported Bernie Sanders, in each county in the state of Nevada.
My husband and I left the Democratic Party, after 38 years, to join the Green Party, the same night the Nevada State Democratic Chair, committed malfeasance against the Delegation. There is footage on YouTube, of the two of us, burning our Democratic Voter Registration cards.
Thank you for your consideration.
Co-Secretary Candidate: Jennifer Nevarez
Dear members of the Nevada Green Party,
My name is Jennifer Nevarez and I am writing today to ask for your support as the Nevada Green Party Co-Secretary.
I grew up in a politically indifferent household and often heard that my voice didn’t matter. First, let me start out by saying that that sentiment in entirely wrong. Second, all our voices matter and when we band together we are unstoppable. I spent a few months phone banking and canvassing for Bernie Sanders last summer but the Democratic Party process scarred me pretty badly so I left with quite a few other people. Thank fully I learned of the Green Party and I cannot believe that I found a party that fits me so perfectly.
I am first and foremost a mother, and all I want in this world is to make it better for my daughter and the rest of her generation, to teach her that the world is bigger than she is and that we need to take care of it and every living thing inhabiting it. The Green Party is truly a party for the people, caring for everyone, regardless of which side of the political spectrum you fall. I spent the months following praising and spreading as much information about the Green Party and Jill Stein as could.
I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2011, on the spur of a moment and I have to say that it was the best decision I ever made. Las Vegas has a very diverse population and I have been pleased to meet and get to know people from all walks of life. Prior to moving, I worked as a Paraprofessional in Special Education, which taught me patience, optimism, perseverance, and a sometimes unconventional way for conflict resolution. I’ve learned that it is okay to be different and to always enjoy the little things in life.
I have experience keeping meticulous notes and records, and having that information readily available should it be needed. I was required to keep in contact with parents, support staff and other paraprofessionals about day to day functions with students and the goings on in class. I am responsible, hardworking, organized, and work well under pressure or stress, qualities I believe are necessary in the position of Co-Secretary.
I am dedicated to this party and should I be selected I will be dedicated to this position. Thank you for your consideration.
At-Large Candidate: Lisa Sumiyoshi
I am Lisa Sumiyoshi and as a 28 year Nevada resident, I love our state and I love our region. I am an activist, as well as a business owner. My family and I owned 4 businesses, Shooters Bar and Grill, Lahaina Grill, Realty 7 and we currenly own and operate Ohana Realty LV, all in Las Vegas, Nevada, over this 28 year period, which I believe makes me very familiar with the wants and needs of our community.
I’m very proud to have home-schooled our daughter, I was involved with Moms Across America, bringing public awareness to the harmful effects of GMOs in our food system and marched in the first March Against Monsanto in Las Vegas.
I’m an organizer at heart, I have organized phone-banking for Bernie Sanders, I was a Team Leader for text messaging for Bernie Sanders, as well as organizing supporters through Facebook, Twitter and other Social Media outlets, as part of the People for Bernie Sanders, grassroots group.
I was instrumental in involving Johanthan Tasina – author of The Essential Bernie Sanders, for a book signing, persuading Greg Auerbach – creator of the ‘Finally a Reason to Vote’ posters and banners and Paul Sasso – the owner of the Bern-mobile to our cause, The Debate Rally for Bernie Sanders on 10/13/2015. I was the liason between our organizers, rally attendees and luminaries in attendance, with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Deptartment. Last but not least, with the help of my daughter Jennifer, we were able to record the Nevada State Democratic Convention in 2016, in its entirety for public viewing on YouTube.
In summary, I believe I would be a great addition, as an At Large Member to bring the Ten Core Values of the Green Party, into mainstream politics and breaking up the duopoly that has a stranglehold on America today.
