Talk is cheap. In the age of slacktivism, talk literally costs nothing. If posting memes on social media really changed the world then we’d live in something close to a perfect utopia.
But change isn’t that simple. It takes work.
Under the coming onslaught of the Trump regime, it’s time for progressives to unite under a new banner, a party that stands for the causes they support and care about: civil rights and liberties, equal pay for equal work, racial and social and environmental justice, medical insurance for all Americans and the right for women to control their own bodies, a healthier food system, honoring treaties with indigenous peoples, standing up for the rights of the LGBTQ community, moving our energy systems and economy away from fossil fuels by rebuilding our infrastructure sustainably, and creating a more peaceful world by ending wars over dwindling resources that lead us toward a less secure future at home and abroad.
The Democrats have proven time and again they are not the true party of opposition. Consider the recent selection of Perez, a neoliberal in the Clinton tradition, to lead the DNC down the same road of doom they rode to defeat last November. Democrats faltered under the Bush administration and have already begun to crumble again under Trump.
Important cabinet positions went forward with very little resistance and in one important case—climate change denier Scott Pruitt’s nomination for the top position at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), closely tied to the oil and gas industry—Democratic Senators Manchin (WV) and Heitkamp (ND) caved.
Things We Truly Care About
It’s well past time for a voice in our politics that can only improve our protection of the things we truly care about, the things valued by Americans of conscience. Social media is a fine tool but only if it leads to action. If you’re reading this far, you obviously care. If you’re tired of calling elected officials who ignore your concerns and vote against your interests, it’s time to stop the griping, shouting at the radio and/or television, wringing your hands wondering what you can do.
The Change We Truly Need
Walk the walk. Join the Green Party and help us build the true resistance. It will not be quick, it will not be easy—but it will be work worth doing. And years from now, when we have filled our local, state, and national governments with Greens, you’ll be able to say you did your part to create the change we truly need.
