(LAS VEGAS, Nev.) — The Nevada Green Party (NVGP) announced its support of the legislation being promoted by Florida Sen. Lauren Book to combat “revenge porn” and calls upon Nevada legislators to do the same.
The legislation now being pursued by Sen. Book would strengthen Florida’s existing revenge porn law by making it a felony to buy, sell or trade stolen sexually explicit images from someone’s phone or other digital devices. It would also make disseminating altered or created sexually explicit images, often known as deep-fakes, a felony.
“Non-consensual pornography has been an issue for years, and it continues to be,” says Margery Hanson, GPNV co-chair. “We are speaking out in support of Senator Book and at the same time calling upon the Nevada legislature to safeguard the health and safety of our citizens by strengthening Nevada’s own legislation.”
GPNV co-chair Alex Mann agrees. “The problem with the law as it stands is that it is too narrow and does not incentivize media outlets (including porn outlets) to make sure they know the provenance of where images and videos came from. The current law also does not prohibit or penalize people who received the images second or third-hand.”
Additionally, Nevada’s current law does not address so-called “deep-fakes” which are becoming more prevalent. A deep-fake is a video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else, typically used maliciously or to spread false information.
